Date of Service: Mar. 10, 2018

HEYBURN – passed away Saturday, Feb. 24, 2018, at Cassia Regional Hospital in Burley.

Martin was born in Schwusen Christ Glogau, Germany on April 9, 1924. He came to the United States with his parents and an older brother on a ship called “Colombus” when he was four months old. They settled in Hinton, Iowa, where a sister and another brother joined the family. During the Dust Bowl, his dad decided to homestead on East Willwood by Powell, Wyoming. Martin rode with his dad on the emigrant train to Wyoming while the rest of the family rode the passenger train. They arrived at that farm on Oct. 31, 1934. They farmed, had a greenhouse and later a florist shop in Powell. Martin graduated from Powell High School in 1942. He was drafted into the U.S. Army where he served as a medical aideman with the 24th Infantry Division in the Philippine’s and Japan. After WWII he attended Northwest Community College, taking agricultural courses under the GI Bill.

He and his brother did a great deal of electrical wiring for the homesteaders on Heart Mountain. Martin put his name in to draw a farm in Rupert, Idaho. On Feb. 15, 1957, loaded with three kids (Julie, Fred, and Steve) along with the family dog (Tippy) they moved to Idaho. Three more children were born in Idaho, (Kathy, Keith, and Kristie).

Martin was active in the Paul United Methodist Church, the Emerson Grange, the Rupert Co-op, and 4-H projects.

He enjoyed his children and grandchildren, a quick wit, straight corrugates, fishing, mutton chops, making ice cream and peanut brittle, a good nap under the tractor on a hot day, singing hymns and along with an eight-track of those of his generation like Johnny Cash or Eddie Arnold, and he also enjoyed helping others.

He was preceded in death by his wife of almost 65 years, Lorraine; brother and sister-in-law, Hans & Helen Muecke; brothers-in-law, John Bock and Ral Hall; nephew, Cy Muecke; daughter-in-law, Sherry Davis; and one grandson, Ryan Andrew Lindskog.
