Robert Walter Schenk

BURLEY – Robert Walter Schenk, age 94, of Burley, Idaho, passed away Monday, May 14, 2018 in Boise.

He was born March 25, 1924 in Paul, Idaho to Jacob and Mary Roemer Schenk. Both of his parents were Germans from Russia who came to the Mini-Cassia area in the early 1900’s. Bob grew up and attended school in the Paul and View areas.

He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in March of 1944. He served in the South Pacific at Guadalcanal, Peleliu, Okinawa, and in Tientain (Ching Wang Lao), China. He was honorably discharged in May of 1946. Shortly after returning from the service, he met Fredona Woolstenhulme and they were married in December of 1946.

They farmed in the View area until 1959, when they drew a desert-entry homestead northwest of Paul, in the Crestview area. Over the next fifty-plus years, they developed a successful farm and cattle business, Schenk Land and Cattle, now located in Oakley, Idaho. Robert and Fredona were honored as “Cattle Feeders of the Year” by the Idaho Cattle Feeders Association in 1972. They were also inducted into the Southern Idaho Livestock Hall of Fame in 2008. Bob was involved in the family business until his death. He was a member of the Rupert Country Club, the PCA Board, the Idaho Cattle Association, the Board of Idaho Cattle Feeders, and the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association.

He is survived by three children, Barbara Schenk of Boise, Idaho, Linda (Barry) Tanner of Paul, Idaho and Dallan (Brenda) Schenk of Oakley, Idaho. He is also survived by six grandchildren, Cori Tanner, Chris Tanner, Logan Schenk, Robyn (Ryan) Fisher, Jake (Tiffany) Schenk, and Casey (Kyle) Elfe; seven great-grandchildren; two sisters, Irene DalSoglio of Twin Falls, Idaho; and Virginia Worthington of Meridian, Idaho; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Fredona; his parents; an infant daughter; a granddaughter; a son-in-law; and three brothers and sisters.

A visitation for family and friends will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Sunday, May 20, at Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley.

A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, May 21, at Gem Memorial Gardens, 2435 Overland Ave., in Burley. Military rites will be performed by the Mini-Cassia Veterans.
