Mary Louise Merrill

Aug. 31, 1927 - May 15, 2020

Date of Service: May 29, 2020

BURLEY – Mary Louise Merrill, age 92, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday May 15, 2020, in her sleep. At 1:40 a.m. she arrived at the gates of Heaven to a reunion in her new home in Paradise.

Mary Lou Soule was born on August 31, 1927, in Pasadena, California, to Ruth and Raymond Soule, joining her two older sisters, Arline and Viola. She was the valedictorian of her high school class, then attended Pasadena City College. Mary Lou was a shy girl but she was active in her church and taught in Sunday school in Burley, Idaho. She loved having pets as a child. Mary Lou was a house wife most of her life but while her children were in school she worked for Arthurs Insurance Company, with Charles and Dick Arthur, whom she remained friends with her entire life. She was a devout believer and undoubtedly she was welcomed into heaven by Jesus with words such as, “Welcome home my good and faithful servant.” We all have comfort to know she is rejoicing with all her friends and family that went before her.

Mary Lou resided in Burley Idaho for 44 years after moving from La Canada, California. She was a member of First Baptist Church and later Crossroads Bible Church until her death.

Mary Lou was married to John Churchill Merrill on March 12, 1954, at Calvary Baptist Church, in Pasadena, California. She and John honeymooned to Yosemite National Park on a camping trip. They loved to camp and, as a family, spent all of their vacations camping. Mary Lou loved to be with family and friends. She was a loyal friend to many for most of her life.

Mary Lou’s favorite pastime was to cook and entertain guests. She loved to host dinner parties on holidays with her extended family and for church events. Family was special to her and everyone was always welcome in her home. She loved to play games and go on walks and passed that tradition on to her family. They were members of the Good Sam RV club and had many camping trips in their later life. Among her last trips was going with her boys and their wives on two cruises to Alaska. Those cruises will always be remembered with the fondest of memories.

Mary Lou is survived by three of her sons, Don (JoAnn) Merrill of Heyburn, Alan (Patsy) Merrill of Burley, and Gary(Angela) Merrill of Phoenix, Arizona; her sister, Viola Johnson of Laguna Woods, California; eight grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren with two more on the way.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John; her son, David; her sister, Arline Stueckle; and brothers-in-law, Ray Stueckle, and Art Johnson.

A viewing will be held from 5 until 7 p.m. Thursday, May 28, at Rasmussen-Wilson Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., in Burley. Social distancing compliance will be adhered to at the direction of the funeral home staff.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, May 29, also at Rasmussen-Wilson Funeral Home. Attendance will be in full compliance with the State of Idaho regulations for social distancing to help control the spread of the Coronavirus. Attendance at the funeral is restricted to 50 people and is by invitation only. A public graveside service will follow the funeral at the Pleasant View Cemetery.
